Why Is My Garage Door Opener Beeping?
By the H&D Garage Door team · Updated
Why is my garage door opener beeping?
A garage door opener usually beeps for one of three reasons. Its battery backup is running the opener during a power outage or needs a new battery. It is warning you that the door is about to close on its own, from a timer or an app. Or it is flagging a problem, such as an obstruction. The beep pattern, plus any colored light on the unit, tells you which.
Count the beeps and note what else is happening: is the power out, is a small light on the motor unit orange or red, and is the door moving? Those three answers sort out almost every case. The patterns below come from Chamberlain Group, which makes both LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. Other brands use different signals, so check your manual if you have a different opener.
Beep patterns at a glance: what they mean and what you can safely do
- A beep every 2 seconds, battery light solid orange (LiftMaster/Chamberlain with battery backup): the opener is running on battery power. Check whether the house has power, then the breaker and the outlet. Call a technician if power is on, the outlet works, and the light stays orange.
- A beep every 30 seconds, battery light flashing orange (LiftMaster/Chamberlain with battery backup): the backup battery is low. Confirm the opener has power. If the light doesn't change to flashing green, replace the battery as the manual shows. Call a technician if a new battery doesn't stop it.
- A beep every 30 seconds, battery light solid red (LiftMaster/Chamberlain with battery backup): the battery is dead and can't recharge. Replace the battery. Call a technician if a new battery doesn't stop it.
- Beeping for about 8 seconds, then the door closes (Security+ 2.0 models): Timer-to-Close is on. Nothing to do if you set it. Keep the doorway clear. Call a technician if the door closes by itself and nobody set a timer.
- Beeping and a flashing light when you close from the myQ app (myQ Garage, Smart Garage Hub or Smart Garage Control): a required warning before an unattended close. This is normal, so there is nothing to do. Call a technician if the beeping keeps going after the door has closed.
- Beeping, the opener lights flash 5 times, the door stops or goes back up (Security+ 2.0 models): something got in the way of the door. Clear the doorway and check the safety sensors. Call a technician if it keeps happening with nothing in the way.
- One beep when you press a button on the motor unit (Security+ 2.0 models): normal feedback while limits or force are being set. Nothing to do.
- Beeps while you set up Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi models): 3 slow beeps mean it connected; 3 fast beeps mean the Wi-Fi settings were erased. Follow the app's setup steps. Call a technician if setup fails over and over.
If your opener has no battery backup and none of these match, the sound may not be the opener at all. Chamberlain points to its 888LM and 889LM wall controls, the myQ Garage accessory, and other nearby warning devices, such as a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm or water softener.

Battery backup beeping (LiftMaster/Chamberlain)
A battery backup keeps the opener working when the power goes out. It beeps for two reasons: to tell you it is running on battery right now, or to tell you the battery itself is worn out.
- Every 2 seconds, solid orange light: the opener is on battery power. Once utility power comes back, the beeping should stop. If the power is on and it doesn't, Chamberlain suggests plugging another device into the same outlet to see whether the outlet is working. A tripped breaker or GFCI can kill power to the garage while the rest of the house stays lit.
- Every 30 seconds, flashing orange light: the battery is low. If the opener has power and the light doesn't switch to flashing green, replace the battery.
- Every 30 seconds, solid red light: the battery is dead and can no longer charge. Replace it.
How long does the backup run? Chamberlain says a fully charged battery gives about 24 hours of standby and up to 20 full open-and-close cycles at room temperature. The replacement is a 12-volt, 4.5 amp-hour rechargeable battery. The support pages we checked don't give a lifespan in years. The light on the unit is the signal to watch.
Why it often starts after an outage. An outage is when the battery actually gets used. A battery that has been aging quietly gets drained during the outage, and if it can't recharge afterward, the 30-second beep begins.
Can you stop the beeping while you wait for a battery? Chamberlain says yes: unplug the opener, disconnect the battery, then plug the opener back in. The beeping stops, but you will have no backup power until the new battery is in. Swapping the battery is an owner-level job your manual covers. It has nothing to do with the springs or cables on the door, which stay off limits.
Genie openers. Genie's battery backup page describes status lights rather than beeps: green means charged, yellow means charging, and red means the unit failed to charge. A red light that lasts more than 48 hours means the battery needs replacing. For Genie beep meanings, check the manual for your model.
Beeping when the door closes by itself or from the app
That beeping is a required safety warning. The UL 325 safety standard, also written into federal rules, allows a residential opener to close the door without someone at the wall button only if three conditions are met. The opener must have a secondary safety device such as photo eyes. The feature may be used only on sectional doors. And the opener must sound an audible alert and flash a light for 5 seconds before the door starts moving.
Two features trigger it:
- Timer-to-Close. On Chamberlain Security+ 2.0 openers, the opener beeps for about 8 seconds before it closes, and the beeping continues until the door is fully closed.
- Closing from an app. Chamberlain's myQ Garage, Smart Garage Hub and Smart Garage Control beep and flash a light when you close the door from your phone. Chamberlain calls this normal.
The industry trade association DASMA also describes a two-strike rule: if an unattended close fails twice, for example because the door reverses off an obstruction, the system blocks further remote closes until someone uses a control at the door.
If the beeping keeps going after the door has closed, Chamberlain lists a few causes. The door position sensor may have fallen off the top panel. Or the opener's memory may have been cleared, or its logic board replaced. Don't try to silence or bypass the warning itself. It is there because nobody may be watching the door when it moves.
Beeping plus flashing lights: when it's a sensor or travel problem
On Security+ 2.0 openers with firmware from November 15, 2020 or later, Chamberlain says an obstruction makes the opener beep and flash its lights 5 times. If it happens while opening, the door stops. If it happens while closing, the door goes back up. Wi-Fi models get this update automatically.
Start with the doorway and the two photo eyes near the floor. Our guide to sensor lights shows what each sensor light means. If the opener is also flashing a numbered code on its arrow buttons or Learn LED, use our LiftMaster and Chamberlain error code guide to read it.
A door that keeps stopping or reversing with nothing in its path may be binding, have worn rollers or a spring problem, or need its travel settings checked. Those are jobs for garage door opener repair, not trial and error.
Cold garages and storm outages
Cleveland and Milwaukee. Genie notes that extreme cold can shorten a backup battery's life, and Chamberlain's runtime figures assume room temperature. In an unheated garage during a Great Lakes winter, expect less runtime from an older battery, and check the battery light before winter rather than after the first outage. Our Milwaukee garage door opener repair page covers what winter does to openers there.
Florida and Middle Tennessee. In Central Florida, Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. In Middle Tennessee, spring storms cause most outages. Either way, outages are when a backup earns its keep. Run your opener's battery test as the manual describes before storm season, so the first time you learn the battery is dead isn't during a blackout. Our Orlando service page lists the areas we serve in Central Florida.
Is it your driveway gate beeping?
If the beeping comes from a gate operator at the end of the driveway, the patterns are different. See our LiftMaster gate opener troubleshooting guide.
When to stop troubleshooting and call
Call a technician when:
- A new battery doesn't stop the beeping, or the battery light stays red
- The opener runs on battery even though the outlet works
- The door closes by itself and nobody set a timer or used the app
- The opener beeps and flashes as if something is in the way, but nothing is
- The beeping comes with grinding, a door that hangs crooked, a loud bang or a gap in a spring
Stop using the door if it looks crooked, a cable is loose or a spring has a gap. Battery swaps are yours to do. Springs and cables are not. H&D Garage Door repairs openers in Orlando, Nashville, Cleveland and Milwaukee. Call (888) 410-7013 or request service online.
