How old are Elyria's garages?
Older than most people expect. In the city's most recent housing plan, about 78% of Elyria's homes were built before 1979, and about 20% were built before 1939. Early-1900s homes sit near downtown, with mid-century and later subdivisions toward the edges of the city.
Elyria was founded in 1817 along the Black River, where Heman Ely built a dam, a gristmill and a sawmill. By 1900 it was a town of about 8,000, and much of its growth came in the first half of the 20th century as manufacturing arrived.
That history means many Elyria garages are detached buildings behind the house, added after the home was built. Some were built for one small car. Others have been rebuilt or expanded, sometimes with framing that doesn't quite match the door that hangs in it.
Common problems with older detached garages
Older garages tend to share the same set of door problems, and Elyria has plenty of them.
Extension springs. Many older doors use springs that stretch along the tracks rather than a torsion spring over the header. They need safety cables through each spring. If yours don't have them, or the springs look stretched or gapped, call a technician.
Settled slabs. Old concrete floors crack and sink. When the slab is no longer level, the door can't seal along the bottom, and light, water and snow get in. A thicker or flexible bottom seal can help, but sometimes the bottom section has to be adjusted.
Soft jambs. Wood jambs and headers near the bottom of the opening rot when snowmelt sits against them. The track brackets screw into that wood, so soft jambs can loosen the track.
Limited power. Some detached garages have one outlet or no power, which affects what kind of opener you can add.
Our garage door repair service for the Cleveland area covers all of these.

Mid-century and newer homes in Elyria
Away from downtown, Elyria's neighborhoods shift to post-war ranches, split-levels and later subdivisions with attached garages. Those doors are more likely to be steel sectional doors on torsion springs, with an opener that was added or replaced at some point.
Here, typical repairs are a broken torsion spring, a frayed lift cable, worn nylon or steel rollers and an opener that hums but won't lift. Doors that face the street also take hits from cars, which can crease a section or bend a track.
If one section is dented and the rest of the door is sound, a panel replacement may be possible, depending on the door's make and age. If the door is older and parts are no longer made, replacement may make more sense. Our garage door panel replacement page explains how we decide.
Commercial doors for Elyria's manufacturers
Elyria is still a manufacturing town. The Ridge Tool Company, maker of RIDGID tools, has been headquartered here since 1943. Invacare, the medical equipment company, is headquartered in Elyria, and Parker Hannifin and BASF have operations in the city, along with many smaller manufacturers.
The region also lived through hard times. Plant closings over the decades hurt the local economy. Some older industrial buildings from that period are being reused for new businesses, and their doors often need repair or replacement before a new tenant moves in.
We repair commercial sectional doors, rolling steel doors and their operators. Our commercial garage door repair page lists what we handle.

What affects the cost of a garage door repair in Elyria?
We don't quote prices online because every door is different, but we can explain what moves the number.
The part that failed matters most. A spring, a cable, a roller set and an opener logic board are very different jobs. Door size and weight matter too, since heavier doors need heavier springs. On older detached garages, rotted jambs, a settled slab or missing safety cables can add work. The make and age of the door decide whether replacement parts are still available.
When we visit, we'll explain what we found, what needs to be fixed now and what can wait, and give you the price before we start.
Old paint on older Elyria garage doors
With about 78% of Elyria's homes built before 1979, a lot of garages here carry layers of old paint on wood doors, jambs and trim. That matters, because lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978, and paint older than that can contain lead.
The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule applies to paid work that disturbs painted surfaces in most homes built before 1978. Contractors doing that work are expected to follow lead-safe work practices, such as containing dust, avoiding dry sanding and cleaning up carefully. Replacing a painted wood garage door or cutting out a rotted jamb can disturb old paint.
If your home is that old, it's reasonable to ask any contractor how they will handle painted wood on the job. You can also skip the problem in some cases. A new steel or composite door replaces a painted wood door entirely, and vinyl or aluminum jamb wraps can cover old trim after a repair.
For homeowners, a few cautions help. Don't dry-scrape or power-sand old garage door paint. Keep kids and pets away from paint chips around the threshold, where paint wears fastest.
