Older homes, smaller garages: repair or replace the original door?
Cudahy grew up around Patrick Cudahy's meatpacking plant and became a city in 1906. Its population peaked at about 22,000 in 1970. Census estimates show that about 45% of homes in Cudahy were built before 1960 and about 7 in 10 before 1970. More than 1 in 5 dates from before 1940. About 1 in 6 homes is in a two-unit building, such as a duplex.
On homes of that age, it's common to find a single-car garage with a narrower opening than today's standard sizes. Some still have an old wood door or an early steel door with extension springs running along the tracks.
How we decide between repairing and replacing an older door:
- Repair it when the sections are solid and the problem is a spring, cable, roller or opener.
- Replace it when wood sections are rotted or split, steel is rusted through at the bottom, or parts for that door aren't made anymore.
- Measure first. A replacement for an older single-car opening may need a door made to that size, so we check the width, height and headroom before ordering.
Detached and shared garages
A detached garage has its own problems. If the door is the only way in, a power outage or a broken opener can lock your car inside. An outside emergency release, a lock on the door that works from outside, or a battery backup opener can each solve that. If your garage has no power yet, adding an opener means running a circuit first, so check with the City of Cudahy's building inspection office about the electrical permit.
In a duplex, the garage may be shared or split between units. If you rent, your landlord is usually responsible for the door, so tell them first. If you own the building, give us the unit and the door when you call so we can plan the visit.

Old openers without safety sensors: time to replace
Federal rules from the Consumer Product Safety Commission require residential openers made on or after January 1, 1993 to meet the UL 325 entrapment protection standard. That's why newer openers have two photo eyes mounted a few inches above the floor on each side of the door.
In a city with this many older garages, we still find openers without them. If yours has no sensors near the floor, it was likely made before 1993, and it should be replaced, not repaired. The same goes for an opener that doesn't reverse when the door touches something on the way down.
Our guide on whether to repair or replace a garage door opener covers the other signs, like stripped gears and a failing board.
Lakefront winters: springs, frozen seals and stiff openers
The official thermometer for the Milwaukee area stands at Mitchell International Airport, right next door to Cudahy. Its 1991-2020 normals put January's average overnight low near 17°F, with close to 49 inches of snow in a typical winter. Homes near the lake also get the wind off the water.
Winter is when these problems show up:
- Broken springs. Many spring breaks are noticed on cold mornings, when the door suddenly won't lift. Leave it closed and see Milwaukee broken spring repair.
- A bottom seal frozen to the floor. Don't keep pressing the button. The opener can strain the door and its parts trying to pull it loose.
- A slow or stiff opener. Cold thickens the grease on the door and opener, and an opener that was borderline in summer may stall in January.
Our post on cold-weather garage door problems covers the safe checks you can do yourself.

Commercial doors for industrial and airport-area businesses
Cudahy has been a working industrial city since its meatpacking days, and businesses near the airport and along its commercial streets depend on their overhead doors. Food processing, manufacturing, warehouse and service buildings use sectional doors, rolling steel doors and loading-dock doors that may open many times a day.
We repair springs, cables, tracks, curtains and operators on commercial doors. See commercial garage door repair, and tell us the door type and its size when you call.
Scheduling a visit in Cudahy
Call (888) 410-7013. Our call center sends the closest available technician, and same-day service is available. If you'd rather use the form, we'll call you back within an hour.
When you call, tell us whether the garage is attached or detached, whether it's shared with another unit, and roughly how old the door and opener are. That helps us bring the right parts. If your project changes the size of the opening or adds wiring, check with the city's building inspection office first.
