Common garage door repairs in Milwaukee
When the temperature drops into the teens and below, hardware that was borderline in the fall starts failing. Rollers with worn bearings freeze up and skid in the track. Hinges crack. Cables that have been rusting for years snap. A bottom seal that's gone stiff and split lets meltwater under the door, which then freezes it to the slab.
Impact damage is the other big category in the city. In the bungalow neighborhoods, most garages face a narrow alley. Cars, delivery vans and trash trucks back through those alleys, and a clipped door can end up with a bent section, a cracked panel or a track knocked out of line.
What you can check safely
Before calling, make sure both photo eyes near the floor have steady lights and aren't blocked by snow or a bin. Check the wall control for a lock or vacation setting. Put a fresh battery in the remote. Look at the bottom of the door for ice holding it down.
That's the limit for do-it-yourself checks. If a cable is loose or frayed, the door sits crooked, or a spring shows a gap, leave it alone. Those parts are under heavy tension. Our national garage door repair page explains more.

Fixing alley garages in Milwaukee, Wauwatosa and West Allis
More than 40% of Milwaukee's housing predates 1940, and the bungalow-era blocks in the city, Wauwatosa and West Allis are full of detached garages on narrow lots. These garages often have single-car doors in non-standard sizes, older extension springs, and slabs that have settled toward the alley.
When we repair one, we check how the tracks are fastened to the framing, whether each extension spring has a safety cable, and whether the slab has dropped enough to leave a gap under the door. A gap lets in snow and rodents and keeps the seal from doing its job. We can often fix it with a taller bottom seal or a threshold seal.
If the door is badly damaged or rotted, we'll quote a repair and a replacement side by side. See garage door installation in Milwaukee.
Repairs for attached garages in the western and northern suburbs
In Brookfield, New Berlin, Menomonee Falls, Germantown and newer Lake Country subdivisions, attached garages see different wear. Builder-grade rollers and hinges wear out together, and doors on homes with three-car garages carry a lot of weight on their hardware. We replace rollers, hinges, cables and seals and rebalance the door so the opener isn't doing the spring's job.

What affects the price of a repair?
The price depends on the parts needed, the door's size and weight, and how much damage or rust there is. A single roller swap is quick. A bent section and track after an alley hit takes more. We'll give you the price before starting. For more about where we work, see our Milwaukee service area page, or broken spring repair in Milwaukee if a spring snapped.
