How have tornadoes shaped Gallatin's garage doors?
Gallatin has been hit twice in recent memory. On April 7, 2006, an F3 tornado killed seven people in the Gallatin area and damaged about 700 homes and businesses in Sumner County, including Volunteer State Community College. On December 9, 2023, an EF-2 tornado with 130 mph winds crossed the city, damaging homes in The Club at Foxland Harbor and along Highway 109, Steam Plant Road, and near Hartsville Pike. About 600 homes and businesses in Sumner County were damaged.
A garage door is the biggest opening on most houses, and strong wind can push it in, bend its track, or pull its sections apart. A damaged door is still under spring tension, so don't try to force it open or closed. Our emergency garage door repair page explains how to keep everyone safe until a technician arrives.
What do lake homes in Fairvue Plantation and Foxland Harbor need?
Old Hickory Lake covers about 22,500 acres, and some of Gallatin's best-known neighborhoods sit on it. Fairvue Plantation grew around an 1832 mansion and opened as a golf-course community in 2004. In Foxland Harbor, the villas have two-car garages while one builder's section has three-car, side-entry garages. Kennesaw Farms, a former thoroughbred farm, began residential development in 2004 on about 300 acres.
Larger lake homes often have side-entry garages with two or three doors, sometimes with heavier insulated or carriage-style doors. Lakeside humidity rusts the lowest hardware first, and several doors installed at once tend to wear out together. If you're adding or replacing openers for a multi-door garage, our garage door opener installation page covers belt-drive, wall-mount, and smart models.

Do Gallatin's historic districts regulate garage doors?
They regulate changes to openings and materials. Gallatin has two local historic districts: East Main Street, designated in 1993, and Woodson Terrace, designated in 1996. The Historic District Commission's checklist requires a Certificate of Appropriateness to change the size, shape, or features of an exterior door opening, to add or fill in openings, to install a prefabricated garage or carport, or to replace a building material with a different one. Applications are due 14 days before the meeting.
Outside the districts, Gallatin's permit list covers new garages and carports but doesn't name garage doors, so call the city's codes office if you're unsure. Historic homes like Rose Mont, an 1842 Greek Revival house on South Water Avenue, show how far back Gallatin's housing goes.
How does Gallatin's winter cold affect garage springs?
Deep cold shows which springs are worn out. In January 2024, Gallatin got about 8 inches of snow and hit 9 degrees below zero on January 17. On mornings like that, grease stiffens, seals freeze to the slab, and a spring near the end of its cycle life is more likely to snap.
If you hear a bang and the door won't lift, leave it closed and don't use the emergency release. Our post on how long garage door springs last explains cycle ratings, and why higher-cycle springs can be worth it for a door you use many times a day.

Do you service Gallatin's distribution and manufacturing sites?
Yes. Gallatin is home to Gap Inc.'s 2.3-million-square-foot campus next to Vol State, the largest site in Gap's global distribution network, and Beretta USA opened a 156,000-square-foot plant on a 100-acre site in 2016. Vietnam Veterans Boulevard, finished to Gallatin in 2007, makes the city a quick run to I-65.
Sites like these depend on dock doors, rolling doors, and high-cycle sectional doors. Our commercial garage door repair page covers the doors, operators, and safety devices we work on.
