Garage Door Repair in Orlando, FL: Common Problems and How They Get Fixed

What are the most common garage door repairs in Orlando?

Four problems account for a large share of garage door repairs everywhere, Orlando included: a broken spring, an opener that stops working, a door that has come off its track, and damaged panels. Noisy operation and worn rollers are common too. Each has different warning signs, and each is fixed differently.

The good news is that most of these are repairs, not replacements. A door that is otherwise in decent shape can usually be returned to smooth, safe operation with the right parts. Our garage door repair page covers the full list of what we fix.

Why did my garage door spring break?

Springs do almost all the lifting. Every time the door opens and closes, the spring goes through a cycle, and every spring is built for a limited number of cycles. When it reaches the end of that life, it snaps, often with a loud bang. Rust shortens that life, and Central Florida humidity makes rust a real factor.

Signs of a broken spring include a visible gap in the coil above the door, a door that opens only a few inches, and an opener that strains or hums without lifting. Do not keep pressing the remote. The opener is not designed to lift the full weight of the door, and forcing it can damage the opener or pull the door off track.

Spring replacement is a job for a trained technician because springs hold a lot of stored energy. Most doors with two springs should have both replaced together so they wear evenly. See broken spring repair for how we handle it.

Why won't my garage door opener work?

Before assuming the opener is dead, check the simple things. Make sure it has power, replace the remote batteries, check whether the wall control's lock mode is on, and look at the photo eyes near the floor. If one sensor light is blinking, the eyes are blocked or out of line.

If the opener clicks or hums but nothing moves, the problem may be a stripped drive gear, a failed capacitor or a broken spring. If the door reverses before it reaches the floor, the force or travel settings may need adjusting, or something is binding in the track. Summer storms and power surges are also hard on opener circuit boards in Orlando.

Many openers can be repaired. If yours is old, lacks modern safety features or needs a major part, replacing it may make more sense. Learn more about garage door opener repair.

What should I do if my garage door is off track?

Stop using it. An off-track door can twist, jam or fall, and running the opener will usually make the damage worse. Unplug the opener and keep people and pets away from the door.

Doors come off track after being hit by a car, from a broken cable, from worn rollers, or from track brackets that have worked loose over time. Fixing it means putting the rollers back in the track, straightening or replacing bent track sections, and finding the cause so it does not happen again. Because cables and springs are often involved, this is not a safe DIY repair. Read about off-track repair.

Should I repair damaged panels or replace the whole door?

If one or two sections are dented and the rest of the door is in good condition, replacing just those panels is often the practical choice. The catch is matching. Manufacturers change designs and colors, so an older door may not have a matching panel available. In HOA communities, which are common around Orlando, a mismatched panel may not be allowed.

Replacement makes more sense when several sections are damaged, the door is old and rusting through, or you want better insulation and a stronger wind rating. A technician can tell you whether matching panels are available for your door.

What affects the cost of garage door repair in Orlando?

Every repair is priced on what your door actually needs. The biggest factors are the type of repair, which parts are required, the size and weight of the door, whether the door is single or double, and whether other worn parts should be replaced at the same time. Timing matters too, since an urgent visit can cost more than a planned one.

The best way to get an accurate number is to have the door looked at. Our Orlando garage door repair page explains how humidity, storms and surges shape repairs here. Contact us and we will give you the price before any work starts.

When is a garage door problem an emergency?

Treat it as urgent if the door will not close and your home is open, if the door is hanging crooked or off track, if a cable has snapped, or if your car is stuck inside and you need it. Those situations are covered under emergency garage door repair. Call us and we will schedule the earliest available visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?

It is not recommended. Without a working spring, the door is extremely heavy, and lifting it by hand or with the opener can cause injury or damage. If you must get a car out, call a technician. Do not pull the emergency release when the door is open, because the door can fall.

How long do garage door springs last?

Spring life is measured in cycles, meaning one open and one close. Standard springs are built for a set number of cycles, so a door used many times a day wears its springs out sooner. Rust from humidity also shortens their life. Ask your technician about higher-cycle springs if your door gets heavy use.

Why does my garage door go back up when I try to close it?

The most common cause is the photo-eye sensors. They may be dirty, blocked or knocked out of alignment. Other causes include incorrect force or travel settings on the opener, or something binding in the track. Clean the lenses and clear the floor first. If it still reverses, have the door inspected.

Is it worth repairing an old garage door?

Often, yes. Springs, rollers, cables and openers are replaceable, so a structurally sound door can keep working for years. Replacement makes more sense if panels are rusting through, several sections are damaged, matching parts are no longer made, or you need a door with a higher wind rating.

Do you repair all garage door brands?

Yes. H&D Garage Door works on all major brands, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton and Craftsman. If you know the brand and model of your door or opener, mention it when you call. It helps the technician bring the right parts for your door.
